A rose by any other name would smell as sweet.
These roses may not have a scent, but they look lovely and are very quick to make, once you have the hang of the pattern.
Materials
Scraps of brightly coloured yarn - 5g of 8ply (Double Knit) will be plenty for one rose. You can vary the size of your flowers by using thicker or thinner yarns.
Suitable size hook for your yarn - I use 4mm with 8ply
Stitches used
(In UK/Australian terms)
Ch Chain stitch
Slst Slip stitch
DC Double Crochet
Tr Treble
DTr Double Treble
FLO Front loop only - stitch is worked in the loop nearest from you, not the whole top "V" of the row below
BLO Back loop only - same as FLO, but worked in the loop furthest from you
Chart
Key for chart
Method
Make a foundation chain of 26 Ch.
Row 1
This row is shown in black on the chart.
Starting in the second Ch from your hook, make a DC in each Ch to the end. (25 stitches)
Row 2
This row is shown in purple and red on the chart.
Ch 4. Make 2 DTr in the first DC of Row 1.

First four steps
Make 2 DTr in the next stitch.
Working BLO, make 2 DTr in the next stitch, Ch 4 and secure with a Slst in the same stitch.

Work in the back loop only!
You have now completed the first large petal.

First petal complete, and front loop of third stitch is unused
Working FLO (where my hook is pointing in the photo above), make a Slst, Ch 4 then 2 DTr in the same stitch. This is a bit fiddly at first, but gets much easier with practice!

Shown in red on chart
Make 2 DTr in next stitch.
Working BLO, make 2 DTr in the next stitch, Ch 4 and secure with a Slst in the same stitch.

Two large petals completed
Repeat the previous three steps three more times, so you have five large petals.
Working FLO, make a Slst, Ch 3, then 2 Tr in the same stitch.
Make 2 Tr in next stitch.
Working BLO, make 2 Tr in the next stitch, Ch 3 and secure with a Slst in the same stitch.
This completes one medium petal.
Repeat two more times, so you have three medium petals.
Working FLO, make a Slst, Ch 3, then 2 Tr in the same stitch.
Make 2 Tr in next stitch.
Working with BOTH loops, make 2 Tr in the next stitch, Ch 3, and secure with a Slst in the same stitch.
You should now have five large petals and four medium petals. There will be six stitches left to work.
Make a Slst in the next stitch, Ch 2, then 2 Tr in the same stitch.
Make 2 Tr in the next stitch, Ch 2 and secure with a
Slst in the same stitch.
This makes one small petal.
Repeat two more times, so you have three small petals.
Fasten off your last stitch and cut your yarn so that you leave a long tail for sewing up - it should be longer than the rose!

Leave a long yarn tail
Sew in the end from the beginning of the foundation chain, into the back of the first large petal.
Starting with the first small petal, roll up the petals and secure with small stitches at the back. Turn it over as you sew, to ensure that it is forming a rose shape that you are happy with.
When you have sewn all along the length of the rose chain, secure with a couple of extra stitches and then weave the end through the back of a large petal.
You now have a beautiful rose, that can be used in a variety of different ways!
Let your imagination run wild: sew a pin on the back for a brooch, attach to a hair slide or band, sew on to a handbag or a hat, make a necklace with them, use them to decorate presents, make a summer wreath or garland. This will work wherever you might want a rose! And remember, roses can come in all different colours, not just red or pink.
