There are two fairly easy methods for creating a ribbed edge with crochet. This first method works by making stitches in only the back loops of the previous row, at right angles to the main body of your project.

For this tutorial, I have made a Basic Beanie Hat - please click here for instructions on how to crochet one - but decided to finish it off with a ribbed edge.

Materials
Co-ordinating or contrasting yarn - amount needed will vary depending on the size of item you are ribbing
Appropriate hook for yarn
Tapestry needle

Stitches used
(In UK/Australian terms)
Ch Chain stitch
Slst Slip stitch
DC Double crochet
BLO Back loop only - stitch is worked in the loop furthest from you, not the whole top "V" of the row below

Method
Row 1
Join in your ribbing yarn with a Slst and Ch 1.
Working BLO, DC in same stitch as Slst and all following stitches of previous row. Secure yarn end by working over it for the first few stitches.

Work DC into the loop furthest from you

Join last DC worked, to top of first DC with a Slst.

Row 2
Ch 7, then working BLO, make a DC in second Ch from the hook.

Work BLO DC in remaining 5 Ch (6 stitches)
Secure to next stitch in Row 1 with a Slst.
Slst into next stitch and turn.

Row 3
Skip Slst and work BLO DC in all DC of Row 2. Turn. (6 stitches)

Row 4
Ch1 and work BLO DC in all previous stitches. (6 stitches)
Secure to next stitch in Row 1 with a Slst.
Slst into next stitch and turn.

Repeat Row 3 and Row 4 until you have worked all the way along the edge of your item.

If you have an even number of stitches in Row 1, you will finish at the top of the edging after a Row 3.

Seam
Ch1. Insert your hook in BLO of last row worked and then the unworked front loop of Row 2. (3 loops on hook)

Make a Slst to join the two edges together and repeat in remaining 5 stitches.

Cut yarn and draw through last loop with hook.

Using tapestry needle, pull yarn through to wrong side, closing up any gap left. Sew in yarn end.

You will now have a neat ribbed edge to your item!
